Overlooks the Shannon Estuary in Glin Co. Limerick. It is the seat of
the Knight of Glin, whose family (Fitzgerald) have had lands here for over 700
years. The castle is owned and occupied by the 29th Knight of Glin and is now a
luxury hotel.
Recalls the era 1939 - 1945 when trans - atlantic air traffic between Europe
and north America centred on Foynes, with seaplanes using the sheltered strait
between the village and Foynes Island.
Foynes Annually celebrates the village as the birthplace of Irish or
Gaelic Coffee, concocted for cold and weary seaplane passengers arriving ashore
at the air - terminus. A festival to celebrate the world famous Irish Coffee is
held annually in Foynes in the month of July. Family entertainment, music,
street theatre and lots more. The highlight of the festival is the World Irish
Coffee Making Championships.
Located in the village of Loghill, these gardens contain herbaceous beds,
roch gardens, rosebeds, green and sun-houses and a herb garden.
This new idea celebrates the diversity and character of gardening in this
part of the West of Ireland. We are fortunate to have the Gulf stream which
affords us our mild, subtropical climate in which we can grow many tender and
usual plants.
The trail gardens exhibit passion and variety, making it essential to
visit them all! Fortunately for the visitor, the gardens are situated along some
of the most attractive routes through the country and can be included in the
classic tour.

In mediaeval times, Askeaton was a stronghold of the Munster Geraldines,
the Anglo-Norman Earls of Desmond. The original Askeaton Castle was built around
1199 on a small island in the River Deel and, by the 14th century, had become a
principal residence of the Desmond Fitzgeralds. Other places well worth a visit
include the ruins of the 14th century Franciscan Friary and the 13th century St.
Mary's church.
The N69 Scenic Drive is a leisurely drive along the banks of the River
Shannon on the way to North Kerry. Starting in Limerick City the drive meanders
along the Shannon Estuary visiting attractive villages and towns such as
Askeaton, Foynes and Glin.
Limerick is a proud, progressive and thriving City with a charter older
than that of London.
Its castles, ancient walls and museums are testament to its dramatic past.
Particularly worth viewing is Limerick's Emblem 'the Treaty Stone" and King
John's Castle in its Heritage precinct as well as the magnificent Hunt Museum in
Limerick's Custom House.
This museum houses an internationally important collection of some 2,000
original works including pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Renoir and Picasso.
Limerick City is the Capital of the Shannon Region and is an excellent centre
for shopping and is also rapidly building a reputation for dining and the City
has its own 'Good Food Circle' of restaurants.
